Outside hitter for Lube Civitanova and for the Italian national team, silver medal in the 2015 World Cup and in the Olympic Games of Rio 2016, besides an almost endless series of titles won with his clubs (in particular two consecutive Champions League won when he played for Trento): as a volleyball player, Osmany Juantorena is well portrayed by his sporting achievements, which makes him one of the greatest and most winning player of Italy and not only. Less known are his activities outside the volleyball court: almost one year ago, Juantorena opened a new gym in Civitanova Marche with his partner Sheila Calcina. “NOI.5 Fitness Club was born from the idea of two friends united by the passion for sports – Juantorena explained – We wanted to put together our skills and experiences to create a place where you can take care of yourself and to grow people’s awareness about the importance of a correct nutrition and a healthy and active lifestyle”.
Juantorena and the functional training for volleyball
The number 5, which has been Juantorena jersey number for the whole career, is not the only link between the gym and the sport played by the 33 years old Cuban-Italian hitter: “At NOI.5 Fitness Club, we have athletic conditioning programs for every sport, including volleyball. I think that functional training is very important in my sport, as it is in many others. In our case it is essential specially for the preseason preparation, because once we start playing we have no time and no opportunity to grow the loads and then rest. The benefits of this kind of training include the improvement of the whole performance, from strength to speed and endurance, but it also helps to handle the stress of the multiple close matches during the season”.
Juantorena: the athletic preparation for the World Cup
Juantorena is actually getting prepared for the imminent Volleyball World Championships, which is going to start the next 9th of September: “It’s an extremely important competition and we are working hard since the first days of August to get ready for it: we want to give our best and to get as far as possible. Usually I train for 5 hours per day, with my trainer that manage all the athletic part and the single exercises. In particular, we concentrate on the jumping endurance, which is one of the main aspects to focus on in volleyball”.

Being Juantorena busy with volleyball trainings and matches for most of his time, it is his partner Sheila Calcina to almost entirely manage the Club day by day: “Our approach is to provide our members a program which could allow to train with every possible methodology, from the ‘fat burning’, and therefore aerobic, to functional and isotonic, through dynamic and funny courses like functional training, pilates, low-impact exercise or pre and post-partum/operation/injury exercise. All of this both in group and in personal trainings, always aiming to improve both the athletic performance and the quality of everyday life”.

NOI.5 Fitness Club does not have only training programs in its offer, but also the possibility to complete your athletic path with a correct nutrition: “Once a member complete his sign up, he makes a complete check up examination, so that we can create a personal file accordingly to which we can elaborate a nutritional program linked with his trainings, his body composition and his personal functional features. All of this is than constantly monitored and updated to adapt to the results achieved by the member, in such a way that we can transmit him the right motivation”.
